Professor Mughal has over 30 years experience in the treatment of cancer of the oesophagus and stomach. He has performed over 500 resections and is experienced in all surgical approaches including:

  • Ivor-Lewis two-stage approach

  • three-stage oesophagectomy with neck dissection

  • salvage oesophagectomy after previous chemoradiotherapy

  • total & subtotal gastrectomy

​

His mortality for oesophagogastric surgery has been around 1-2 % over the last 10 years.

Professor Mughal works with specialist oesophago-gastric multidisciplinary teams (MDT) at the London Digestive Centre and the London Clinic to ensure sound decision-making and best outcomes.

Gastroesophageal reflux, hiatus hernia, achalasia

Professor Mughal is experienced in the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, hiatus hernia and achalasia and offers the following procedures:

  • Laparoscopic Nissen (360 degree) fundoplication

  • Laparoscopic partial (270 degree) fundoplication

  • Re-operation for failed anti reflux surgery

  • Laparoscopic Heller's operation for achalasia

  • Laparoscopic and open repair of hiatus hernia including giant hiatus hernia

He works with gastroenterologists, radiologists and oesophageal physiologists for a thorough assessment to determine if surgery is indicated and the best procedure.
