Professor Mughal has been a consultant general surgeon for 30 years and has specialist expertise and wide experience in the treatment of upper GI and endocrine conditions. He is Director of Surgical Oncology at Cleveland Clinic London, honorary Clinical Professor ​at University College, London and honorary Consultant Surgeon at University College Hospitals London.

His clinical practice is based in London where he consults at the Cleveland Clinic Outpatients, 24 Portland Place, London and operates at the Cleveland Clinic London.

He has 25 years experience in the review, design and reconfiguration of clinical services in the National Health Service, and has successfully lead major reconfigurations in the North West of England and London. He has a major interest in improving cancer care at a system level and has led on streamlining cancer Multidisciplinary Teams for 10 years. He served as joint Chief Medical Officer of the North Central London Cancer Alliance between 2019 and 202. He also works with national medical professional bodies including the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the National Institute of Health Research.

He has been providing medicolegal expertise in the areas of general and upper GI surgery for 16 years.

Professor Mughal has also been involved in teaching, assessment and designing teaching programmes for 30 years. He has served on the examination panels of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Intercollegiate Specialty Board In General Surgery and has been an external examiner for higher degrees for several universities in the UK and abroad.
